Boeing has announced a significant investment of $240 million CAD in various Québec-based enterprises to advance aerospace innovation and support sustainable aviation. This includes $95 million CAD for Wisk's autonomous, four-seater eVTOL aircraft, showcasing Boeing's commitment to next-generation aviation technologies. In addition to supporting Wisk, Boeing is investing $110 million CAD in an Aerospace Development Centre within the new Espace Aero Innovation Zone, fostering collaboration for cutting-edge aerospace technologies. Boeing is also investing $35 million CAD in advanced landing gear research in partnership with Héroux-Devtek. A pretty sudden fall from a company that seemed to be making real headway in low to zero emissions flight. I've been skeptical about hydrogen for aviation, but they were showing us that it could work for at least part of the sector. But money isn't cheap. None of it will be cheap or easy though. SAF and e-fuels might be relatively swappable in existing turbines, but the infrastructure to produce them at scale will be immense. Electric aviation will require grid and substation upgrades at airports (and that's IF it somehow overcomes the power-to-weight issues). I've been learning that, at least here in California, we're doing pretty well on building out renewables to support our current grid load. But, even without the current upswing in datacenter power demand, we have to build way more to get to zero (net or otherwise). No matter the hard-to-abate sector - industrial heat, concrete, aviation, shipping - they will all require massive amounts of clean electricity. #energy

I still remember my early days with NASTRAN—when I made a rookie mistake confusing RBE2 and RBE3 elements. Trust me, it wasn’t pretty, I ended up paying with 8 days of my holidays! 🔧 𝗥𝗕𝗘𝟮 𝘃𝘀. 𝗥𝗕𝗘𝟯: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲? •   𝗥𝗕𝗘𝟮 (Rigid Body Element 2): RBE2 elements create a rigid connection between nodes. They force all connected nodes to move together as a single rigid body. Mathematically you force the movement of several nodes (dependent) to move like the central node (independent). This is perfect when you need to simulate a stiff connection, like attaching a bracket to a structure. But be careful—using RBE2 can overly stiffen your model and lead to unrealistic stress concentrations. •   𝗥𝗕𝗘𝟯 (Rigid Body Element 3): Unlike RBE2, RBE3 elements distribute loads in a more flexible way, without adding stiffness to the model. Mathematically the move of the central node (dependent) is the weighted average of several nodes (independent). They’re ideal for simulating connections where you want to distribute loads across multiple nodes, like attaching a force to a surface area. RBE3 is great for maintaining realistic deformation while still accurately representing load distribution. 🔍 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱: Each has its place in structural modeling—RBE2 for rigid connections and RBE3 for flexible load distributions. Re: Waymo Vehicle Encounters Massive Water Obstacle This is indeed a challenging case, and I don’t hold Waymo responsible for it. After all, it could be confusing for any autonomous vehicle, let alone many humans. However, humans have an advantage in adapting. We can more easily retreat, work around, or take risks because AI lacks localized contextual reception. As AGI is not a present-day achievement and will be difficult to achieve without human-like contextual reasoning in the near future, situations like this will likely continue to arise. The limitations of the situation are what revealed the vehicle’s operating suspension. The first and third laws of robotics make it implausible for the vehicle to solve this problem without human intervention (direct or indirect). The operational ruleset is constrained with digital guardrails to prioritize human life above all else. Additionally, there is a literal physical ‘guardrail’ to its left with flexible bollards. When a boundary check is conducted, the vehicle cannot cross it without risking the safety of humans inside or outside the vehicle, or otherwise requiring human intervention (remotely most likely) to allow the vehicle to deviate. Lastly, while there is a side street for the vehicle to route around the obstacle (potentially; its exact destination is unknown from this angle), it cannot legitimately follow that track without endangering lives on a one-way street. This would require the vehicle to back up into potentially oncoming vehicles or foot traffic. Given the high liability, the vehicle suspends operation, and that’s not a bug but a feature—one we should accept rather than criticize. I rarely post about journal publications unless there is something special about it and this one…oh yes, it is! First and foremost, it is co-authored by Aderik Verraest, an Honors Program student of our Bachelor program (nowadays Aderik is doing his Master of Science) showcasing the high potential in science of our best students. Is cutting and pasting from NASA's CEA code causing your pointing finger to become a workplace injury? This is an interesting example case of rocket launch cost breakdown. You can clearly see all the cost drivers of the rocket. I agree with the business insights, although I am surprised by some of the data. This list is a breakdown by % not $, so it is difficult to discern actual launch cost. Without the details of the hardware architecture and reuse plan, it is difficult to line this up with component cost. In particular, propellant seems very low. But with a nonreusable rocket (e.g. ULA Vulcan) propellant becomes a smaller % of total launch cost. Component costs are higher because there is no launch vehicle cost savings gained by amortizing unit cost over multiple launches. An important part of reducing launch cost is having a reusable first stage. The same amount of propellant is a much smaller percentage of a nonreusable rocket than a reusable rocket. I would be very interested in seeing this breakdown (in $ and %) for both nonreusable and reusable rockets. I'd also prefer to reorganize this by vehicle cost and mission ops cost, as those two launch cost categories are managed differently.

Bombardier Inc. experienced a significant surge in its stock price on Wednesday, reaching its highest level since October 2018. Adding to the positive news, Bombardier announced the pricing of its $750 million aggregate principal amount of new senior notes due June 1, 2032. These notes will carry a 7.000% per annum coupon and will be sold at par. The issuance of the new notes is expected to close on or about June 5. Canadian aerospace leader, Bombardier, has successfully closed its $750 million senior notes offering, marking a significant milestone in its financial strategy. The notes, maturing in 2032, carry a 7.00% interest rate per annum and were sold at par value. This strategic move enables Bombardier to utilize the proceeds, along with existing cash reserves, to address its existing debt. The company plans to redeem $338 million of its 7.125% senior notes due in 2026 and $450 million of its 7.875% senior notes due in 2027. Before these redemptions, Bombardier had $504 million outstanding for the 2026 notes and $1.4 billion for the 2027 notes. These redemptions are slated for completion by June 20, 2024.
